Using your personal modem to connect to 2degrees services
In this article
When you join 2degrees Broadband, you can get a 2degrees modem or use your own – we call this a BYO (Bring Your Own) modem.
Can I use my own modem for my Broadband connection?
Yes, you can – unless you are on our Wireless or Rural Wireless Broadband, in which case, you’ll need a 2degrees-supplied modem.
Renting a modem takes the hassle out of getting your broadband connected. Our modems are set up and ready to go, you just need to plug it in and follow these simple instructions. You can also find a printed copy of these instructions included in the box.
When you join 2degrees on a contract, we’ll send you a rental modem to use while you’re with us. There will be a $5/month modem rental charge (plus a $15 delivery charge), and you'll need to return it to us when you leave, or a fee may apply.
If you Bring Your Own modem, you’re not charged a modem or shipping fee.
Please note that we can only provide limited support if you choose to supply your own device. You will also need to input all the modem settings yourself.
What specifications does my BYO modem need to connect to 2degrees Broadband?
Using your own modem on our broadband network is easy. All you need to do is ensure the modem you want to use is compatible with the plan you've chosen before getting started.
If you've received a modem from your previous provider, you should simply be able to plug it in and be up and running within a few minutes.
If you've purchased your own modem for your Fibre connection, you'll want to make sure it supports DHCP authentication and VLAN tagging. You should be able to find this information in the documentation that came along with your new modem or directly on the manufacturer’s website.
NOTE: If you’ve purchased your own modem, we won't be able to troubleshoot any issues with your particular model (including the Wi-Fi). If you need a hand with troubleshooting, we suggest getting in touch with the manufacturer directly.
What settings should I use for my personal (BYO) modem?
Bringing your own modem
Using your own modem on our broadband network is easy, just confirm that the modem you want to use is compatible with the plan you've chosen before getting started.
Right now, if you bring your own modem, we cannot support VoIP with your connection. If you’re coming with your own modem, we also won’t be able to troubleshoot any issues you may have with your Wi-Fi in terms of connectivity around your home or being able to connect to specific devices. If you experience any such issues, you’ll need to get in touch with the manufacturer of your specific modem.
If you've purchased your own modem, you'll want to make sure it supports DHCP authentication and VLAN tagging (you can refer to the modem documentation or manufacturer’s website directly if you're unsure).
Check out the relevant setup guide below for the full details, more information on specific modem compatibility, and the manual settings you might need to get online.
To get a modem from us, get in touch and we'll set you up with a rental modem for just $5 per month plus a one-off charge of $14.95 for postage and handling.
Transferring from a different broadband provider
If you've received a modem from your previous broadband provider, you should simply be able to plug it in and be up and running within a few minutes once we connect you. This process does take a few minutes to complete, so please be patient while getting started.
If your modem is from any of the providers listed below, they most likely will need to be manually configured. See below for what these manual settings are.
- BigPipe Fibre Modems
- Skinny Fibre Modems
- My Republic* Modems
