Multimedia Messages (MMS)

An MMS is basically a way to send your pics/video messages straight through your mobile network, no WiFi or data needed! Your MMS can be up to 300KB.

What converts your message to an MMS?

  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Audio
  • Emojis
  • Macrons
  • Messages exceeding 160 characters
  • Group messages (sending to multiple recipients)
  • Sending to an email address rather than a mobile phone number

Some phones are set up by manufacturers to send certain messages as MMS and not SMS. So, your phone might switch them automatically, and you won’t even notice the change from an SMS to MMS.

Cost of an MMS

When you’re in Aotearoa, sending an MMS to someone will cost you 50 cents per MMS, no matter if they live in Tauranga, Toowoomba or Texas.

It's free to receive text or photo messages on your mobile in New Zealand. If you’re roaming overseas and get an MMS, make sure to turn on Data Roaming to download it. Keep in mind that some data charges will apply.

Where to find an MMS listed on your Pay Monthly Invoice?

If you notice on your Pay Monthly invoice that there have been charges listed as “Picture messages” these are MMS’ that have been sent.

You will find this listed on the first page of the bill under “Your Usage Charges”. If you have more than one connection on your account you will need to scroll down to the “Service detail” pages to find which number has sent this message. You will find the message listed under “Usage (incl GST)” in the “Texts” section.

Issues sending an MMS

Common troubleshooting steps if your MMS is not sending:

  • If you’re on Prepay make sure you have enough credit to send the message. It’s 50c per each message.
  • If you’re on Pay Monthly make sure you have enough spend control remaining.
  • Always check that your mobile data is switched on. Even if you are connected to Wi-Fi your mobile still needs to be on so that the APN settings can be accessed to send an MMS successfully.
  • If all else fails restart your phone.
