Satellite partners
In search of network expansion to connect our customers across Aotearoa, we’ve partnered with AST SpaceMobile, Starlink and Lynk to build a formidable mix of satellite communications providers. Our focus remains on rapidly exploring LEO technology with a careful eye on usability and tangible benefits for all users.
AST SpaceMobile
We’ve partnered with satellite cellular broadband network provider AST SpaceMobile to bring internet data services* to 2degrees customers via satellite during 2026.
The service is designed to provide 4G LTE and 5G cellular broadband directly to *everyday smartphones without the need for any specialised software or device support, ensuring connectivity for customers when they are outside of traditional coverage areas.
As part of this initiative, we will invest in the development of our own dedicated ground station in Aotearoa, reinforcing our commitment to providing innovative solutions that expand connectivity across the country.
Our aim is to launch this new satellite data service in 2026 following equipment delivery, real-world testing, and ground station development occurring over the next 12 months.
*We expect our Satellite data and internet services will require direct line of sight between your device and the satellite and to only be available for compatible everyday phones.
Lynk Global
Lynk Global builds, launches, and operates ‘cell-tower-in-space’ satellites that provide direct-to-standard-phone (sat2phone) connectivity with global coverage. This should work with most mobile phones currently available.
*Satellite text coverage for NZ will be available while a Lynk Satellite is directly overhead at your location and there is a direct line of sight between your device and the satellite. The service is unlikely to work if you’re indoors and if you’re in dense bush or there are other obstacles between your device and the satellite it may not work. While satellite numbers are growing, the service will not be near instantaneous. But when more satellites launch in the future, the service should be available more consistently and delivery should become faster.

Starlink Business Services
We’ve also partnered with Starlink’s enterprise-grade satellite system. This allows us to provide high-speed and low latency internet connectivity for businesses working in remote locations or out of the way places.
